Alright, so we’re back with part 2 of ‘Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?’. If you’re reading this, and you were planning on celebrating Halloween, heres some information to think on to reconsider.
What we’ve learned so far is that we are supposed to be lights in darkness. Realistically, it should be easy to tell things of Light from the things of darkness. Things of light and dark are diametrically opposed to one another. As shown in Galatians 5:19-23, murder, witchcraft, drunkenness, and wild parties (which happen to be some of the things Halloween is known for) are of the flesh, and doing these things are a sure way to cancel your trip to Heaven.
But why do some Christians hold so tight to Halloween? Why is it so hard to stand up for God? Is it easier to abstain from celebrating Halloween when unsaved friends and relatives sanction it? Are we really only going to be a Christian solely in the confines of the occasional prayer?
Ask yourself, why do I want to celebrate a day where murder is promoted?
“Well,” you say, “I’m not going to be dressing as any thing evil, or murdering anyone! I’m going as a slice of bread! Besides, I’m just going because my friends are going”.
If You Can’t Beat ‘em
That reminds me… one of the works of the flesh is emulations. This word is a noun which means an ‘effort or desire to equal or excel others’ (Dictionary.com).
It’s not of God to want to be equal to anyone. Why? Because God made us in His image, we already have the source code within us to be the best.
What am I saying?
I’m saying exactly what your mom (probably) told you when you were a child, just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean that you have to.
Okay?
So, no Halloween.
No costumes, no parties, no office ‘boo-ing’, no candy, no haunted houses… you get the drift.
So, you may be wondering… what do I do instead?
Short answer…
Nothing.
Yep, you got it. Do… nothing on Halloween. This year, when October 31st rolls around do what you would do any other Friday morning (it happens to be a Friday this year -2025-). Get up on time, pray, read the Bible, go to work, do your work, go home, eat dinner, check the children’s homework and book bags, chat with your family, read the Bible, pray, work out, take a shower, go to bed.
Plain and simple.
The Outsiders
If you’re still worried about what people will say about you, the questions your friends will ask you, the looks people will give you… then take a look at 2 Cor 6:14-18. Here the Bible talks about how Christians should not make friends with unbelievers or partake in the things of unbelievers. Even though we have to work with them, we cannot defile ourselves. There is a dissimilarity between us and them, and we cannot give the impression to others who may be seeking the Kingdom that we are alike.
Now, some of your friends might include people who also call themselves Christians and go to Church with you and don’t see a problem with celebrating… Well, now it’s on you to choose if you will let your light shine.
Not saying that those people don’t truly believe, only that maybe the Light of Revelation in that area might not have been shined there yet. God wants to use you, let Him.
Yes, it really is that big of a deal. And, yes, it really is that simple.
You might find it difficult at first because all of your unsaved friends are doing what sinners do… sinning, and you’ll be left out. Congratulations(!) welcome to being a Believer.
In all actuality, if your friends are not Believers you should expect them to think you’re crazy and cause a big stink and stop talking to you. Halloween is a spiritual fight. This is a holiday where people dabble in the occult. People in darkness who refuse to come to Church or accept Christ, want you to stop shining light on them. They don’t want to be saved, and you not celebrating Halloween disturbs their darkness with Light, and we wrestle not with flesh and blood.
So, get used to it… and get used to being alone.
Sorry, but that’s how it is as a True Believer.
Let me give a quick PSA:
IF YOU ARE A BELIEVER… YOU WILL BE ALONE FOR MOST OF YOUR LIFE.
Follow Who Led
Look at Moses, look at Jesus, look at David. Even when Moses led the Children of Israel through the wilderness, he wasn’t very popular. In fact, if you read Numbers 16, you’ll see that a bunch of people thought they were better suited for the job God gave him.
Jesus’ own brothers didn’t believe in Him during His ministry, neither did His village. His own disciples were wishy washy at times, and most of them deserted Him when it was time for the Crucifixion.
David was alone, too. Sure, he had a company of men following him, but just read the Psalms. Even read his life story and see how his men, and even his own son were willing to and did turn on him.
Point being, the only person you will have with you, the only one guaranteed to be with you, is Jesus. He swore that He would never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
If your friends are going to talk about you for not hanging out with them, but scoff and scramble to not go to Church with you… if they tolerate your Christianity like a joke until you get too Holy… if they don’t believe that Jesus is the Christ, Son of the Living God, and live like it…
NEWSFLASH: they are NOT your friends.
Final Question
Are you really going to spend eternity in Hell, separated from God, because Bobby, and Susie, and Becky, and Pei Lin, and Shaniqua laughed at you.
A whole Band of Roman Soldiers laughed at Jesus and He stayed the course, but you’re going to boohoo because your sinner friends are mad because you won’t sin with them?
We, as Believers, have got to get rid of this fear of being alone. We are not alone. We, as Believers, have got to let go of this fear that people/our friends/our family will not like us. We are accepted in the Beloved. We, as Believers, have got to let go of the world…
For what has Light to do with Darkness.
